For many of us, the first port of call may be to turn to the latest superfood, supplement or energy drink to help boost our energy levels when we’re feeling drained. However, there are plenty of other things we can do to help us regain our energy and feel better in a natural way.
Drink more water
Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is an easy way to increase your energy levels. Dehydration is a leading cause of fatigue – besides boosting your energy, water benefits your health by increasing your metabolism, keeping your skin clear and warding off headaches.
Don’t skip breakfast
Numerous studies have shown that eating a wholesome, healthy breakfast kick starts your metabolism and gives you a good energy boost. Other studies suggest that those who eat breakfast also enjoy better memory and concentration, and are less likely to be overweight.
Protein is your friend
Foods with a high protein content provide the body with essential fuel to build and repair tissues. Protein takes longer for the body to break-down than processed carbohydrates, giving you a longer-lasting energy source and making you feel fuller for longer. Try to incorporate protein-rich foods like lean meat, fish, eggs and nuts into your everyday diet and you should soon feel the benefits.
Know your carbs
Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel for your body, but not all carbohydrates can help your energy levels. Processed high-carb foods like white bread may deliver a quick surge of energy, but this wears off quickly and you’ll soon feel lethargic. Try to eat healthy, high-fibre wholegrain foods like porridge oats or wholegrain bread instead. These types of foods, known as complex carbohydrates, take longer for your body to digest, sustaining your energy levels for a longer period of time.
Prep your snacks
If you get too hungry between meals, your blood sugar levels will drop and you’ll start feeling tired. A good way to combat this is to prepare some healthy snacks to keep your blood sugar levels constant. Try to mix your complex carbs with a protein for longer-lasting energy. Nuts, fresh fruit like bananas and apples, yoghurt, boiled eggs and fresh vegetables are all great energy-boosting snacks.
Studies have shown that regular, low-intensity exercise can increase energy levels in the long term. Instead of having a nap, try getting some fresh air and going for a walk.
Rule out health problems
Sometimes, a continual lack of energy may be due to an underlying health issue which needs to be addressed.
