Bluecrest have recently added Coeliac disease to the catalogue of illnesses we can screen for – the test can be added on to a screening package, or it can also be purchased as a standalone test.
Coeliac disease is a common, treatable condition which causes gluten to trigger an immune reaction and chronic inflammation of the small intestine. Around 1 in 100 people in the UK are affected by the disease, and it’s estimated that a further 500,000 are yet to be diagnosed.
Among other things, Coeliac disease can cause bloating, tiredness, digestive problems and stomach pains. If you’re experiencing any of these complaints, you could have an intolerance to gluten and may want to confirm this via a blood test.
Whilst you may have seen advertisements elsewhere which claim to be able to test for intolerances by testing a sample of your hair, it’s important to note that this method of diagnosis has been largely discredited by the scientific community, with the British Dietetic Association concluding that “its (hair samples) use in allergy testing is unproven and has no scientific basis”. The most accurate way to diagnose Coeliac disease is through a simple blood test, which we can offer at Bluecrest.
