The World Heart Federation’s annual World Heart Day falls on 29th September this year. The day is part of an international campaign to spread awareness about heart disease and stroke prevention.
High blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels and a lack of exercise or unhealthy diet are all factors which can trigger heart disease and increase the risk of premature death. World Heart Day was conceived to instil the message that if identified early enough, many heart problems can be prevented.
The main aim of the campaign is to improve health globally by encouraging positive lifestyle changes and educating people about ways to keep their hearts healthy. One major aspect which causes heart problems is carrying excess weight on the body. With obesity at an all-time high in the UK, physical inactivity and a lifestyle of convenience foods have taken their toll on the health of the nation.
On World Heart Day, events take place globally to promote healthy lifestyles and healthy hearts. Sponsored walks and runs, sporting events and concerts have been organised by members of the World Heart Federation.
