Findings, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology publication “Heart Failure”, led by Northwestern University in Chicago suggest that staying slim, keeping blood pressure low and remaining clear of diabetes between the ages of 45 and 55 reduces the risk of heart failure by 86%. Dr John Wilkins, who led the study, commented that the work “adds to the understanding of how individual and aggregate risk factor levels, specifically in middle age, affect incident heart failure risk over the remaining lifespan.
As outlined in this piece about the research, it is suggested that;
- Staying slim in middle age helps to reduce the risk of heart failure by 86%
- While keeping blood pressure low and keeping free of diabetes also helps, men without the risk factors live for 10.6 years longer without heart failure, while women get an extra 14.9 years without the debilitating condition
