Doctor Cullimore says “48% of the UK population has type O blood. Around 12% of people are type O-, and about 36% of people are type O+. Since the remaining 52% of the population is split between 6 blood groups (A-, A+, B-, B+, AB- and AB+), these blood types are more rare and are often sought after for blood donations so a good supply of each blood type can be stored for transfusions. During a blood transfusion, receiving blood from the incorrect blood group can be life-threatening. So in an emergency situation, knowing your blood type can be extremely useful. Different blood types can also be more or less likely to develop certain illnesses – another good reason to check yours.”
