ECG (Electrocardiagram)

Atrial fibrillation is a type of irregular heartbeat.  It’s the most common heart rhythm condition, affecting around 1.2 million people in the UK – it’s estimated a further half a million people have the condition but are unaware.

ECG (Electrocardiagram)

Your heart rhythm check will help you understand more about the rhythm of your heart and the electrical impulses that keep it beating in time.

ECG (Electrocardiagram)

People with an irregular heartbeat (Atrial Fibrillation) are 5 times more likely to suffer a stroke than those without, as the condition increases your risk of blood clots.  So it’s important to find out if you do have the condition so you can get the right treatment to control it and reduce your risk of stroke.

Dr Cullimore says “Although an irregular heartbeat is very common (and often treatable), it frequently goes by undiagnosed as it can present very few symptoms.  People who do have symptoms may notice palpitations (being very aware of their heartbeat), extreme tiredness, shortness of breath or dizziness.  If you’re over 50 or have high blood pressure, your risk of having an irregular heartbeat is increased.  At the minimum, I recommend undertaking an ECG together with a Peripheral Arterial Disease test to give you a fuller picture of your cardiovascular health and stroke risk.”

All our tests have been specially designed to be convenient and non-invasive. Once you’ve booked your appointment, full preparation instructions will be provided in your confirmation email or letter. You can continue to eat and drink normally before your appointment, and you’ll also remain fully clothed throughout.

Which readings are included?

A 6 lead ECG test will be used to check your heart function. The leads are connected to painless sensors which are attached to your arms and legs in order to take the readings. An accredited cardiac consultant will review your trace (the image of your heartbeat over a period of time) and check your readings in detail. The results of the Electrocardiogram will then be displayed and explained in detail in your Results Report.
