Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF)
Basic liver function tests won’t pick up signs of liver disease, particularly in its early stages. Liver fibrosis is the scarring process that represents the liver’s response to injury. Over time this can result in liver cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer. The main causes of fibrosis are alcohol, viral hepatitis B/C and fatty deposits within the liver due to being overweight. Although more common in people aged over 50, a recent study found that the presence of NAFLD in younger people has risen substantially over the last few decades.
The ELF blood test can help assess a quantifiable level of liver fibrosis.
Dr Cullimore says: “Your liver performs a number of important jobs in your body, like regulating blood clotting, converting nutrients from the food you eat, helping fight infection and maintaining hormone balances. Contrary to popular belief, liver problems aren’t just a result of excessive alcohol consumption, but they can make you very ill and even lead to death. ”
All our tests have been specially designed to be convenient and non-invasive. Once you’ve booked your appointment, full preparation instructions will be provided in your confirmation email or letter. You can continue to eat and drink normally before your appointment, and you’ll also remain fully clothed throughout.
